North Lisbon University Hospital Centre

Introduction

The North Lisbon University Hospital Center (CHULN) is one of the main hospitals of the Portuguese National Health Service (SNS), and results from the merge of two important public University Hospitals, Santa Maria Hospital and Pulido Valente Hospital.

CHULN has considerable assets in human resources, applied technologies and in accumulated know-how along with the support it renders to the populations from its area of direct influence, and with the guarantee of a differentiated referencial response in multiple clinical areas, both national and internationally, including in the Portuguese-speaking African Countries (the “PALOP”).

By the end of 2020, the North Lisbon University Hospital Center had a total of 6.538 professionals, with over 1400 medical doctors, distributed across 11 Clinical Departments and 42 Clinical Units.

Lisbon Medical Academic Centre (CAML)

The LMCA integrates the three pillars of the Healthcare Innovation triangle, CHULN, iMM and the Faculty of Medicine.

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon (FMUL) is an institution of higher education integrated in the Classical University of Lisbon.

The Institute of Molecular Medicine (iMM) is considered one of the leading institutes of biomedical research in the country. It is associated to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education.

CAML’s differentiated structure allows for the promotion and development of the academic dimension and qualification of clinical practice, the modernization and development of research, medical education and innovation of the health sciences in pre- and post-graduation.

Clinical Investigation

Clinical Investigation Centre of Lisbon's Academic Medical Centre - CIC-CAML is a Clinical Research Center which aims to centralize all the clinical research management and activities in a recent infrastructure dedicated exclusively to the development and support of clinical trials.

As a Clinical Research Center (CRC), CIC-CAML has dedicated facilities to perform clinical research according to ICH-GCP Guidelines providing to the clinical investigators the necessary infrastructure and services for the support and conduct of high quality clinical trials, from Phase I to IV. CIC-CAML as an infrastructure devoted to centralize clinical research support with a management team including study coordinators and study-nurse staff, allowing enrolment of patients.

At the moment we are involved in more than 180 clinical trials (3 are phase I) and had more than 150 patients included in clinical trials in different therapeutic areas such as: Oncology, Rheumatology, Neurology and Pediatrics. We also conduct observational studies and some of these projects are investigator-initiated studies.

European Reference Networks

European Reference Networks (ERNs) involve more than 900 highly specialised health care teams, located in more than 300 hospitals in 26 European countries.

The main mission of the ERNs is to help patients with rare or low-prevalence complex diseases. CHULN is an active member of the following ERNs. In addition, at the European level CHLUN is also an Associate Partner of InnoSTARS, EIT Health.
